County Executive Laura Curran and Commissioner of Police Patrick Ryder warn residents to be vigilant and recognize the following tips to keep mail protected:

  • Use the letter slots inside the Post Office or hand mail directly to a letter carrier.
  • Avoid sending cash in the mail.
  • Ask your bank or credit union for “secure” checks that cannot be altered.
  • When using collection boxes, drop the mail off as close as possible to collection time.
  • Avoid dropping mail in collection boxes during holiday weekends.
  • When dropping off mail, make sure it has dropped down into the mailbox and is not hung up on any other surface.

As always, it’s also important to be observant of cars and people who appear suspicious when dropping off mail.

Remember, mail thefts occur at all times of the day and night. Thieves typically use a weighted object attached to wire or string and covered in a sticky substance to retrieve mail of postal boxes. Other times, thieves will cover a mailbox draw with a sticky substance to capture ingoing mail.

If you feel as though you may be a target of mail theft, call 9-1-1 and try to provide the police with as much information as possible regarding the description of the suspicious activity. License plate numbers are also extremely valuable information for the police.
